New York
Big Apple – the city that never sleeps, city of contrasts, city of dreams and hopes, the city that sets trends and that had to witness horrible acts of violence in the past.
The city is composed of five boroughs, or districts; the most important and famous is certainly Manhattan.
Orientation in this huge city is remarkably easy; streets extending from east to west (north of SoHo) are named “streets”, while the ones extending from north to south and vice versa are named “avenues”. New York has sights, cultural and gastronomic institutions and shopping opportunities for all tastes, no matter what you are looking for or where you are from. Another important point is security, Manhattan can be considered relatively save, taking a walk through the district is safer than ever before, be it at night- or daytime, the broken windows model seemed to have worked wonders here.
New York is vibrant at all hours of the day, seven days a week. Cultural diversity is immense and serves virtually all tastes. Owing to incredibly high rents and resulting small accommodations most New Yorkers (“Knickerbockers”) dine in restaurants, which in turn explains variety and number of international restaurants. Similar holds for bars and clubs, sky is the limit here and the pace of change is incredible seemingly following the rules of creative destruction. Next to that New York is now shopping haven for Europeans, due to relatively short distances and the ailing Dollar. Go to New York and friends will certainly ask for some sort of souvenirs.
