Mexico City

Approaching Mexico City by plane you quickly get an impression of the tremendous size you can hardly find elsewhere on the globe. Situated 2000 meters above the sea level and surrounded by 5000 meters high volcanoes the city is especially known for the thin and dirty air, never-ending traffic jams and a very high crime rate. There are numerous poor areas in the periphery of the Mexican capital and more and more people migrating there from rural areas every day trying their luck in hopes of a better life.

However do not be discouraged by the negative circumstances of El D.F. (spoken El De Effe): Tourists are for the most part not affected by criminality and do move within better boroughs of the city and with some caution and common sense dangerous situations can be avoided. In addition the air quality improved significantly over the last years.

The discrepancies with respect to wealth is (as in most Latin-American countries) pronounced in Mexico City: In few other cities worldwide you will find as many shopping opportunities, restaurants and noble discotheques. At the same time you will find street children only few meters away of the glamorous and glittering world.
